  1.                               Meningitis
  2. SYMPTOMS. There is usually a sore throat, a cold or other respiratory
  3. illness followed within hours by fever, stiff neck, vomiting, irritability,
  4. headache, drowsiness, confusion, stupor and coma.
  5. CAUSES. Infection by bacteria, viruses or fungi cause inflammation of the
  6. membranes that cover the spinal cord and brain. An epidemic type of
  7. meningitis, called Meningococcemia, is highly contagious because the
  8. organisms are in the throat and in the cerebrospinal fluid. Tuberculous
  9. Meningitis is caused by the same organisms as that of lung tuberculous.
  10. Viruses, usually mumps and polio, may cause a disease called Aseptic
  11. Meningitis that mainly affect young children is the summer months.
  12. TREATMENT. Consult your doctor immediately.
  13. .Meningitis is a serious disease. A spinal tap may be required.
  14. .Antibiotics and other medication may be prescribed.
  15. .Therapy including administration of fluids may be required.
